3 Keys to Sensible Home Decor

Making your home your castle begins with decorating it to reflect your personal tastes. Home decoration is always best when the decorator takes the time to consider the room’s purpose, it's size and it's lighting. When all those elements are considered, it’s much easier to decorate the space for sensible home decor.

The Room’s Purpose

A formal living room has a very different aura than a relaxed family room. The sofa in a formal space is more likely to have an upright back and prominent arms, while a seating in a family room is probably a sectional or armless chair. The formal living room will have a coffee table and side tables with lamps. The family room will either not have a coffee table or one that doubles for seating like a tufted leather ottoman.

The Room’s Size

When a space is small, the color of the walls and ceiling are very important. Covering the walls or ceiling with dark wallpaper or paint will result in the room seeming even smaller. A lighter paint or white paint is optimal for preserving the comfort level of the smaller room. The larger the space the better appeal a dark color has on the room’s walls or ceiling.

The Room’s Lighting

Often the sunlight a room receives affects the window coverings and the light or darkness of the paint on its walls. If the room is flooded with light from skylights and large southward facing windows, the color of the walls can be very dark without detracting from the space. The decorator will take advantage of the lighting and use sheers and valances or cellular shades as window coverings. The homeowner’s privacy will be preserved and the light will continue to shine through.

Home decoration is all about taking full advantage of the characteristics of the space. One must also reduce or eliminate the negative aspects. As long as the decorator keeps the purpose of the room, size of the room and its lighting at the forefront of her mind, the room has the potential to be decorated optimally when it’s complete with sensible home decor.
